The design is comprised of 3 wings, each of which step down with the grade and enclose 3 sides of a SE-facing semi-private courtyard: the main living area, master and garage; kids’ rooms and playroom; and a studio. The courtyard includes a covered dining area, covered walkway to the artist studio, and a play area for the kids. Materials for the exterior of the home include natural wood siding, stone, glass, and standing seam metal on sloped roofs. In order to preserve the natural features of the site and orient the home towards the dramatic mountain views, this challenging site with large rock outcroppings, slopes in front and back, and many mature trees, left a small footprint in which to build. A commitment to using PV solar power early in the project also helped determine the roof form and location.</br>Features of this 4-bedroom home include an open-plan living area that opens to a multi-level patio with covered outdoor Kitchen/Dining area that overlooks the river. The indoor-outdoor connection is enhanced by a large folding glass door and an oversized awning window. A multi-purpose family room also connects to the patio and built-in spa areas. Bedrooms include a main floor guest suite with river-view patio; master suite with den and balcony overlooking the river; and 2 additional en-suite bedrooms. The original floor plan was cramped with no dining room, and the kitchen was small and closed off. A new kitchen addition with a curved roof over the kitchen creates an airy space and reflects the curves of the original dormer roofs. A new dining area is located in the former kitchen, open to both the kitchen and living room. A covered porch and French doors were added to one end of the kitchen to provide access to/from the detached garage. The connection to the river was key in the design, and is achieved visually and physically with multiple wide sliding glass doors leading to outdoor spaces.
